By ELI AMDUR SPECIAL TO NORTH JERSEY JOBS

Let ’ sput some factoids together .

1 . Aretired HR executive whom I ’ ve known for decades , says it ’ s agood bet that 95 percent of all candidates Eli Amdur hired today have been vetted on LinkedIn before they knew they were being looked at .
2 . This May , approximately 6.3 million Americans got hired , according to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics .( Note : this set of stats lags amonth behind the Jobs Report , soMay is the most recent we have . June ’ sreport comes out next Friday .) Nonetheless , one of every 25 Americans in the civilian labor force got hired in May . Huge !
3 . Ofthe 700 million LinkedIn users around the world ( actual number varies by source ), about 30 percent – 210 million – are in the United States .
4 . There are 260 million adults in the U . S ., 161
POWERED BY
million of whom are in the civilian labor force . Now let ’ s put these together and do some simple arithmetic .
As 95 ( more ?) percent of 6.3 million comes out to about 6.0 million people , that ’ s an awful lot of folks whosefate depended , to some degree or another , on their LinkedIn presences . If the number of Americans on LinkedIn exceeds those in the workforce by almost 50 million , it ’ s safe to assume that just about everyone in the workforce is on LinkedIn – give or take a very small variance – including all those employers and recruiters who are vetting you right now .
Does all this give you something to think about ? Or what ?
Now , before we get into the “ or what ?” let me remind you that , LinkedIn ’ s increasing weight notwithstanding , I still insist that overreliance in your job search on LinkedIn ( or any other online job site ) is not proactive enough for my money . But if we ’ ll get past the idea of a job site functioning as a job search and get into the effective functionalities of that job site , we ’ re on the same page .
A strong LinkedIn profile is critical , but what constitutes profile strength ? Further , on what foundation do we build that strength ? Plain and simple , a strong profile starts not with your profile , but with a great résumé . If we liken your LinkedIn profile to a building , your profile is the façade . The rest of the building – the plans , the engineering , the surveying , the construction , the foundation , the steelwork , the interior design , the systems – that ’ s all the résumé . So having a good résumé is important not just for the résumé ’ s sake ; you won ’ t have the best profile withoutit .
Examine how a profile page is structured andcompare it to that of agreat résumé . We ’ ll see the same thing . So , keeping in mind that LinkedIn ’ s plethora of bells and whistles can take forever to learn , let ’ s remember that what we ’ re trying to accomplish stays simple : Get recognized !
Aside from a good photo ( which , of course , is not on your résumé ), here ’ s what it takes .
1 . Make your headlines pithy and punchy . You don ’ t have to accept LinkedIn ’ s defaults .
2 . Your “ About ” section should be robust , to say the least ; in most cases , you ’ ll go past the “… see more …” button . A summary , skills , key accomplishments , and key words are the stars here .

Agood LinkedIn profile doesn ’ t startthere

CAREER COACH
3 . Past work history ( 20 + years old ) may still be important , especially if there are some key accomplishmentsthere . Remember , werecognize Albert Einstein not for what he did in that last50years of his life ( he diedin1955 ), but for what he did in 1905 , whenhewas 26 .
4 . Don ’ t leave sectionsunfilled or incomplete , including those on volunteerism , memberships , affiliations , licensure and certifications .
5 . Include relevant links to your blog , web site , portfolio , and so on .
6 . And remember : key words … key words … key words ! Mostly , people aren ’ t searching for you by your name ; they don ’ t know it yet . They ’ re search by keywords . If you got ‘ em , youshowup .
7 . While we talking about words , make all your words simple and efficient . Make your bullet points concise . Avoid long , rambling paragraphs . And don ’ t copy and paste your entire résumé onto your page . Make them want more .
Doesn ’ t this sound like everything I ’ ve been preaching about résumés all these years ? So don ’ t start or update your profile without first doing or redoing yourrésumé .
A strong profile starts with a good résumé .
