feeling master bath, a large
walk-in closet and views to
the outside. A convenient
cedar closet would be great
and practical, as well. The
flow to the bathroom and
closets was important and
I wanted to feel as if I were
in nature with expansive
views.
My solution began with
the placement of the bed-
room in the more private
area on the first floor. I love
angles and I love fireplaces,
so I did an angled fireplace
that is viewed from the bed
with two very comfortable
chairs in mohair on either
side. It’s such a special spot
to read and look out the
large window at the foliage.
A small French door leading
to the patio and pool again
give me views and flow.
I flanked the bed with
two windows and then did a
large window almost to the

floor looking out to
the gardens.
The bathroom is adja-
cent, and you enter the
walk-in closet to the left
of the bathroom. It cre-
ates a nice alcove into
those two spaces. As you
enter the bathroom the
focal point is the Jacuzzi
with the fabulous view of
nature. It is flanked by two
vanities: his and hers. I
wanted a sit-down makeup
area with natural light and
incandescent, as well as the
magnifying mirror, plus a
TV for the morning news.
The vanities have electrical
integrated into the cabinets
for the appliances. The
olive stone is a limestone
and creates a very calm-
ing feeling. The glass-block
walk-in shower was a must,
as well as the water closet
with bidet. I chose to use
an Asian antique cupboard
instead of a built-in linen
closet.
The walk-in closet has a
his and hers side with a cen-
ter island that has drawers,
a hamper and a granite top
to throw those suitcases
on. An adjacent cedar
closet makes it a breeze for
changing seasons.
Making sure the lighting
is effective is most impor-
tant. I did not want the four
corners of recessed light-
ing which are often used in
master bedrooms. I prefer
to use recessed lights to
enhance the elements in
the room, like the art and
the mirror, and to put pin
spots for reading in bed.
This gives ambience and
function and I still prefer
the 3 to 4 inch in diameter
MR16 halogen bulbs. The
light is just better.
There was a tremendous
number of details to consid-
er and research, and I spent
many hours working it all

The Challenge:
To design a master bed-
room retreat in a new home
that achieves your goals.
The Solution:
The planning stage is so
important — I listed my cri-
teria and figured the square
footage that I needed for
my vision. I wanted to have
a nice-sized master bed-
room (not too small or not
too large), as well as a Zen-

be a complete success, but
one has to be passionate
and committed, and willing
to put the effort in.
