Designed for Living
You can have it all
at home in the backyard

TheChallenge:
Howtoseamlessly
transition from indoor
living to outdoors with
the change of seasons
to accommodate a Terri Fiori
variety of activities, from relaxing, cooking
and dining to recreation.
TheSolution:
Create one main “hub” that would
serve all of the functions.
The overall concept was designed to
be centered around the outdoor gazebo,
which is steps away from the home’s sunroom
and kitchen. This octagonal-shaped
structure was clad in white hardy plank
to blend with the house, and vinyl columns
were chosen as they are immune to the
elements. The gazebo houses the kitchen,
which includes the grill with two built-in
stove-top oven burners next to it and a
stainless-steel, high-powered sink
equipped with an outdoor refreshment
station and condiment bins, among other
features. A mini refrigerator and storage
for all pots and dishes, as well as abeverage
bar off to the side with trash bin and recycling
completes the set up.
All appliances, as well as the cabinetry,
is Viking’s stainless-steel line because of its
resistance to rust. The countertop material
is a leathered black granite and is virtually
indestructible.
An outdoor TV was on this client’s
“wish list”—as was a generous overhang
to be able to enjoy watching sports —even
in the rain. Apowder room is tucked around
the backside of the structure, as well as
additional storage.
The positioning of the gazebo at the
corner of the yard allows for privacy as
does the surroundinglandscaping.
We selected travertine pavers, known
for their heat-resistant qualities, for the
flooring there and by the pool, while the
steps, top of the retaining wall and the coping
around the pool are bluestone for contrast
and its sturdiness. All outdoor furniture is
teak, chosen
for its moistureresistance
and
durability, and
the fact that it
can be left out all
year long.
The dining area
overlooks the pool
and is situated so
the clients could
watch their kids
while swimming.
The blue cushions and umbrellas unify the pool area with the
dining and seating area, as do the travertine paversselected for
their heat-resistance.
Afireplace and comfortable seating
areawere designed for relaxing and extends
the use of the space well into November.
The Gunite pool was set off to the side
of the backyard for two reasons: this is the
part of the yard that gets the most sunlight
and it affords ample space for the clients’
children to still be able to enjoy their outdoor
sports in the adjoining grass area.
Acabana, using the same white hardy
plank for aharmonious look, was designed
to store all of the pool toys and cushions.
The lounge chairs are also teak and help
tie the furnishings together, as do the
navy-blue cushions, the client’s favorite
color, which are used throughout.
The end result? The gazebo and
surroundingpool and landscape are truly
aesthetically pleasing, engaging and
private. Who wouldn’t want to spend the
spring, summer and into the fall there?
