“Our peel and stick items are
not only removable, they can also
be reused if the customer wants to
move them to another wall, as long
as that wall is compatible in size.”
Removable murals are a good
option when decorating a child’s
room, for example. “A child will
over time outgrow their mural,
and the beauty of the product is
that it can be removed or be kept
long term,” adds Fleming. “Our
collection has images for all age
groups, and parents will order
new murals as their child grows.”
Magic Murals also offers in-
house graphic designers to assist
customers at every step of the
project. “Our designers provide
proofs and concepts that will
allow the customer to know exactly
what the wall will look like once
the mural is installed,” he adds.
Among Fleming’s most unusual
customers was a woman who
was assigned to spend a good
part of a year doing research in
a remote station in Antarctica.
“She ordered a mural of a tropi-
cal beach to take with her,” he
recalls. “She wanted a view of a
beautiful beach to help her keep
grounded.”
WALL PANELS
According to Vicki Brown of
Outwater Plastics Industries in
Bogota, another DIY option is to
use pre-fabricated panels to deco-
rate a wall.
“Weathered barn wood-look
planks in a selection of color
variations can be used to create
unique DIY accent walls,” she
explains. “These are 45.5 inches
long and are available in 6-inch
and 8-inch widths.” The planks,
which have a textured finish, can
be either nailed or glued to the
wall, have a Class A fire rating
and are effective against severe
fire exposure. “The boards can be
attached to sheetrock, concrete,
wood or brick with standard
woodworking tools,” adds Brown.
Outwater Plastics offers Wood
Wallscapes, a line of natural wood
planks with three strips of peel-off
adhesive on the reverse side for
easy application.
For those who prefer a more
contemporary look, Brown
suggests Orac Déco Brand wall
elements. “These decorative
embellishments are available in
a variety of sizes and shapes, and
are primed and ready to paint,”
says Brown.
The decorative wall elements
can be grouped to create unique
three-dimensional designs or can

be used as a single point of orna-
mental interest.
“Creating an accent wall using
any of these applications can
achieve a sophisticated look for
a much more modest investment
than if you chose to paint or
install molding or wainscoting,”
notes Brown.” And these accent
walls are quick installs that can
be achieved in less than a day.”
Another source for decorative
panels is Fauxpanels.com, which
offers highly realistic panels made
from high-density polyurethane,
molded from actual rock, stone,
brick and wood. These easy-to-
install, lightweight panels are
weatherproof and are recommend
for interior and exterior use.
Furniture: ‘ savvy shopper’

WHEN A BARGAIN ISN’T
If you’re checking out spring clearance
sales, do so with caution, says designer
Sherman, “I really do not like the word
bargain. It is another way of saying, ‘buyer
beware.’ “I prefer ‘savvy shopper.’”
As for seasonal sales days, Leeds says,
“Every day is the best day to shop for fur-
niture as far as I’m concerned, whether it’s
January 1st or December 31st. “But when
you see 30-, 40-, 50-percent off, know that
the furniture was never meant to sell at the
regular price from the start. The original price
was inflated specifically so it could be dras-
tically marked down.” Rather than settling
for “a deal” on an inferior item, Sherman
suggests re-purposing an old item of quality.
“Furniture should not be like disposable
fashion. If you find a great chair that you love,
is so comfortable you can spend hours
in it, but don’t like the color, reupholster it.
Check in with friends and relatives who may
be downsizing. For example, picture an old
Queen Anne style table and chairs in a tra-
ditional cherry wood with slightly outdated
cushions. Now picture that same table paint-
ed a beautiful navy blue. Change the seats

to a beautiful textured fabric. Voila! New life.
We re-imagine pieces all the time.”
Finally, don’t dismiss professional help,
which can save money in the long run.
Says Sherman, “I strongly recommend
working with a professional designer to
create a plan for you. It can be a great
adventure to jump right in and start buying
things, but you may find you are left with
items you don’t love and could end up at
the curb, which is not a good idea for you
or the environment.”
