East meets West in condo that will be a ‘ forever ’ home
The Designer : TraceyStephens , Allied ASID , NJCID , Tracey Stephens Interior Design , Montclair , traceystephens . com The Challenge : Combiningtwo different design aesthetics in a “ forever ” home with aging-in-place and sustainability features , as well as public and private spaces . The Solution : I had worked withthe client before : in her first townhouse , then in thiscondo when she bought it while still under construction . This third time was with the client and her new husband , where I helped them to annex asmaller 625-squarefoot apartment next door to their 1370-square-foot apartment . Reconfiguring walls and doorways created a spacious combined apartment with plenty of designated zones for the clients and their guests to socialize , work , sleep , bathe and enjoy privacy . The design aesthetic was something that needed to blend East and West .
When the couple first came together , they had very different aesthetics : she loved bold color and exotic global design , especially furnishings and colors from her Indian heritage , and he favored more modern and clean-lined design . Over time , their design styles have blended — she has embraced more simplicity and he has become comfortable with more pattern . The resulting style is an

eclectic mix of global design , modern amenities , custom pieces made from natural materials , antique furnishings and reupholstered seating .
Combining elements from East and West throughout the apartment is at the heart of what makes this project

Patterned rugs are combined with more muted upholstery fabrics ; the modern fireplace with rugged stone surround and reclaimed beam mantle reminiscent of the American West is paired with reupholstered American antiquechairs and acarved Indian low table ; and a Moroccan-inspireddining chandelier hangs above amodern copper-topped dining table . successful . The couple has traveled extensively in Europe and Southeast Asia and have returned with art objects and their travel photography that they frame for display . Some of the beautiful objects and painted furniture were sourced at Jafajems , alocal Montclair shop with product sourced from around the globe .
The following are details of how elements of both East and West are represented in the condo : the wood-look non-slip porcelain floor tile was installed throughout the apartment ( except the bathrooms ) as a simple , neutral background ; patterned rugs are combined with more muted upholstery fabrics ; the modern fireplace with rugged stone surround and reclaimed beam mantle reminiscent of the American West is paired with reupholstered American antique chairs and a carved Indianlow table ; painted Indian cabinetry is situated next to boldly colored modern curtains , and finally , aMoroccaninspired dining chandelier hangs above a modern custom copper-topped dining table .
A warm Tuscan yellow / orange was selected for the main wall color . New colors were introduced as accents : a cobalt blue kitchen backsplash , master bath blue glass tiles , a happy blue wallpaper for the laundry room and agreen backsplash for the bar area .
Knowing that the clients plan to stay in this apartment for as long as possible , every decision was made to optimize aging-in-place and sustainability features , including the nonslip porcelain floor tile , a well-lit mix of warm ambient and bright task light , raised oven and laundry machines to avoid bending down , curb-less shower entry and acomfort-height toilet with night light seat .
The end result ? A “ forever ” home where East and West rest comfortably together .
