The Office of Training & Professional Development provides many training and educational opportunities to non-sworn employees to promote personal and professional development .

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT : MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS TRAINING ( MET )

Management
Essentials Training ( MET ) is a forty hour course designed to introduce managers to the basic fundamentals of management within the Georgia Department of Community Supervision . Students will learn how to transition into a management position while influencing employees .
Modules include the following :
PMF , FMLA , FLSA , EAP Students in this course will identify key Human Resources topics essential for supervisors to maintain compliance ; Performance Management , Family Medical Leave Act ( FLMA ), Fair Labor Standards Act ( FLSA ), and Time and Labor Absence Management .
Media Relations The students will have a better understanding of the importance of positive interaction with the media . The course will provide agency leaders with the necessary skills to handle local " routine " media interviews .
Ethics and Professionalism The course discusses the fundamental principles of ethics and the impact supervisors have in creating ethical , professional cultures in their work units .
Emotional Intelligence Displaying emotions in the workplace can range from beneficial to destructive . Techniques will be explored on how to effectively manage emotions ( and the emotions of others ) in the workplace to result in productive outcomes .

Supervisory Liability Students will discuss methods of limiting personal and agency liability from civil lawsuits , in accordance with law and departmental policy .
Transition : Peer to Supervisor New supervisors will learn the importance of a smooth and effective transition from a peer to a supervisor .
Managing Relationships Given the responsibility to manage a team that will satisfy the needs of customers , support the organization ' s mission , and achieve workrelated goals , the participant will demonstrate behaviors that build and maintain healthy relationships .
Managing Conflict Conflict management strategies will be explored and students will learn how to effectively manage conflict with managers , subordinate staff and colleagues .
The Power of Coaching Leaders in this course will employ the tactics of a coach to help move their team towards being fully successful in their roles and responsibilities .
Leading & Managing Students will participate in discussions to acquire underlying principles and processes to improve their ability to lead and direct staff .
