MIKE PERNELL

We say farewell to one of minor leagues greats

My thoughts on what makes a great QB:

They don't just watch a lot of film, but also understand the game (they're football smart), which lets them recognize defensive tendencies and coverages during the game. They know their opponents' strengths and weaknesses.

They make the right adjustments before each snap (e.g. changing the line protection or the play call) so that they maximize the chance of success on every play.

After the snap, they quickly progress through their receivers and throw to the open receiver.

They can see the whole field and don't stare down receivers.

Their throwing motion and release are both "good" and consistent from snap to snap.

They get the ball out fast (probably between 1.5 and 3 seconds) -- before the pass rush gets to them.

They time their throws and throw the ball in the perfect spot where their receiver can catch the ball and run with it. If there is no space for the receiver to run after the catch, they throw the ball where only the receiver can catch it.

They make difficult throws into tight spaces when necessary (e.g. between two defenders or in the corner of the endzone).

If no one is open, they know how to buy time by shifting in the pocket or running with the ball. At the same time, they know when to just take a sack and live to fight another day

Pernell demonstrated all of these traits and more thats why he is not only a champion but a hall of famer.
