BRETT’S LETTER
Letter from the President
As I reflect upon Christmas, Advent and the New Year, I am inspired by the spirit
of new beginnings and excited about fresh possibilities for the future. You are reading
“The Pulse of Providence,” Providence’s first online newsletter, which is a rebirth
of the Spirit of Providence newsletter which we have known for many years. As we
continue to charter new paths together in the future, we will experience many more of
these new beginnings and “firsts.” This will enable us to continue to grow and evolve in order to
provide the best care for the communities we serve.
Over the past 109 years, Providence has experienced many firsts in our community. In 1905, we became
Waco’s first hospital. We performed Waco’s first open heart surgery in 1973. In 1993, we performed
Waco’s first cardiac stent procedure. We became Waco’s first Joint Commission-certified Primary
Stroke Center in 2008, and became Waco’s first accredited Chest Pain Center in 2011. In 2013, we
created the Providence Robotic Surgery Institute and brought advanced robotic surgery to Waco, which
has been one of the most successful program launches in the history of the da Vinci surgical system.
We held the first “Associate Town Halls” and “Breakfasts with Brett” this past year. These
communication venues provide opportunities to share with you the ways in which we will continue to work
as TeamProvidence to navigate the changing healthcare landscape. I ask that all associates attend a
February Town Hall to learn more about Providence’s turn in the right direction to Clinical Integration.
We are truly privileged to be a part of such a special ministry at an incredible turning point in the
healthcare industry. With great privilege comes great responsibility, and we must remember that we have
an awesome responsibility to the creation of something bigger than ourselves. As it has been for 109
years, our responsibility lies in the roots of our mission to care for those who come to us for healing and
compassion. It is my sincere hope that this this new year will inspire our entire ministry to embrace new
beginnings and new paths of potential growth in the rediscovery of healthcare. Thank you for being a
part of TeamProvidence.
