Earth Day was created as a day to bring aweareness to air and water pollution issues as well as environmental concerns. The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970, and was originated by then - Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin.

The event was first introduced as a grassroots movement at colleges and universities around the country. The date was chosen because it did not fall on exams or spring break but while colleges and schools were still in session. Many college students were already involved in the student anti-war movement and Nelson was able to turn their intrest on to a common worry about the environment. The first Earth Day brought 20 million Americans, coast-to-coast, together for peaceful demonstrations.

There was so much public support that it created the Environmental Protection Agnecy (EPA), Passage of the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act, and several environmental laws.
