What started as a sustainable tourism trend has gotten a whole new meaning in the time of a pandemic – the # staycation is trending again . Staying home , or at least close to home to stop the spread of COVID-19 , need not be a snooze fest ! Back in the 15th century the notable polymath , Leonardo da Vinci , was a huge proponent of taking time off : “ Every now and then go away , have a little relaxation , for when you come back to your work your judgement will be surer .” We have a few ideas how to spend the upcoming long weekends .
Old-fashioned fun
Looking to save money and spend time with family ? Dust off those board games , especially during loadshedding , and have some old-fashioned fun playing Monopoly , Cluedo or chess . If there are only adults around , how about a few hands of poker or blackjack ?
If games are not your cup of tea , call your grandmother and ask her to teach you to knit , crochet or embroider .
Not only is this a lovely way to spend time with your family matriarch , but grandmas hold a wealth of knowledge on how to navigate a sewing pattern and get where to start knitting that woolly hat .
We all must eat , so get cooking or baking . Kids of all ages can help in the kitchen and if you turn your eyes away from the mess this can be a remarkable fun and bonding experience for families of all shapes and sizes . Plus , in 2016 the Journal of Positive Psychology highlighted the stress-relief benefits of undertaking frequent small , creative projects like cooking and baking .
