This talks directly to a larger and more exciting theme : the Millennial passion for the planet , for nature and for taking the role of guardian seriously . It is the reason why veganism is on the rise among this generation , why climate change awareness is growing and the sustainable ‘ circular economy ’ is gaining ground . It is also why a 2019 gardening survey in the United States notes that lawn and garden retail sales are on the rise , led by 18 to 34-year olds whose plant spending has been steadily growing since 2014 .
“ It is been amazing how Millennials have really picked up this idea of gardening , and mostly indoor gardening ,” says Oakes . “ It is this wonderful hobby which we have , kind of , somewhat control over – especially because we do not have backyards or places to call our own , really .”
One convert , Sid Parker , told The New Yorker that Millennials have adopted this love of houseplants as a new way of expressing what it is to be cool . “ It shows a level of maturity ,” she says , adding that at least this is how it comes across on social media .
In other words , for this generation plants may be the new pets . Expect fewer selfies with cats and more with Rhododendrons in the future .
