people . According to the Arrive Alive campaign , young drivers are 20 times more likely to cause accidents due to drunk driving or speeding . These statistics should convince drivers of the urgency and the need to intensify measures to educate themselves , especially if they are young and / or novice drivers . Besides intoxicants , due to their inexperience young drivers tend to be more likely to underestimate hazardous situations .
Sadly , some young drivers mistakenly think that just because they have insurance cover , they are exempt from having to comply with the rules of the road . Others also believe that after the accident , they can run rings around the accident assessor by creating a story about the cause of the crash .
Having worked hard to acquire the car of your dreams , being involved in an accident and having your claim rejected by the insurer because of reckless driving , can be very distressing . To avoid the pain of having to pay – because of a repudiated insurance claim – for a wrecked car that you now cannot use and other insurance claim headaches , here are six things you must never forget :
a . Data from the onboard computer and the vehicle tracking reports indicating the vehicle ’ s speed when the accident occurred , are generally accepted .
b . Familiarise yourself with the excess applicable in the event of a claim ( excess is the first amount payable by the insured in case of a claim ).
c . Confirm what the insurer ’ s theft requirements are , e . g ., is a tracking unit a condition of cover ? They can repudiate your claim if you do not comply with the insurer ’ s requirements .
d . Confirm the non-standard extras ( factory fitted and aftermarket ) fitted to your vehicle . Although you bought the vehicle with these items , i . e ., a sunroof or towbar , it is not automatically included in the vehicle ’ s retail value . Ensure they are correctly specified and insured ( this will influence your premium and insured value ).
e . Ensure that your vehicle is maintained and in a good roadworthy condition . Check the tread of your tyres regularly . f .
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drive recklessly ( such as street racing or greatly exceeding the speed limit ).
