LIFE SOLUTIONS

WHEN

EARNINGS PAUSE

BUT LIFE DOES NOT

By Wimpie Mouton, CEO of PPS Life Solutions
Income rarely feels uncertain while it is still flowing. Whether it arrives as a monthly salary or through work that reliably converts into fees, retainers or billable hours, it creates a rhythm that most people grow accustomed to. Over time, that rhythm becomes something relied on rather than examined. The vulnerability lies not in how income is earned but in how easily regularity is mistaken for reliability.
When one falls ill, becomes sick or suffers a disability, it can have a direct impact on one’ s income. This is not only about the cost of treating or managing the medical condition but also about whether one can continue earning an income, as work may need to be paused or stopped altogether. Many individuals have access to sick leave through their employers but the number of available days is limited. For self-employed individuals, sick leave is often unavailable.
In the days after an illness or injury interrupts earning ability, one’ s attention is often pulled in competing directions. On the one hand, one wants to focus on treatment and getting better, but on the other, concern about managing financially soon begins to compete for attention.
During this initial phase, attention tends to turn to immediacy. Cash availability becomes critical.
