PATERNOSTER AND TIETIESBAAI
If travelling to the North Coast is too far , heading up the West Coast is another option . Paternoster , a picturesque fishing village is about 1.5 hours-drive from Cape Town . Its whitewashed cottages and unspoiled beaches make it perfect for those seeking peace and quiet away from more crowded tourist spots . The town is close to Tietiesbaai , another coastal town known for its serene beaches . Tietiesbaai is located within the West Coast National Park , which makes it a birdwatcher ’ s paradise . The park is home to more than 200 bird species , including flamingos , oystercatchers and pelicans . Tietiesbaai is also an ideal spot to camp , snorkel , dive and go fishing .
WATERVAL-BOVEN AND KAAPSCHEHOOP
Located just off the N4 highway between Pretoria and Nelspruit , Waterval-Boven ( Emgwenya ) and Kaapschehoop in Mpumalanga offer great escapes , especially for adventure lovers . Waterval- Boven – or “ Boven ” as it is often referred to by locals and climbers is world-renowned for its rock climbing and mountain bike trials . It is also South Africa ’ s first Olympic Sport Climber Mel Janse van Vuuren ’ s home town where he grew up and learned his craft . Guides are operating in the area who can assist even beginner climbers in areas such as the “ creche ” ( basic routes ) to the “ God ’ s Window ” route with a 25-grading at the Waterval- Boven Crags .
Just a short drive away , Kaapschehoop is famous for its wild horses , roaming freely along the trails , making it a unique experience for hikers . Horseback riding through the forest adds a serene touch , while the hidden stone circles offer a glimpse into the area ’ s mysterious past .
GOLDEN GATE HIGHLANDS NATIONAL PARK AND CLARENS
Golden Gate Highlands National Park , located in the Free State , is a stunning natural destination known for its goldenhued sandstone cliffs , rugged landscapes and abundant wildlife . It is about a four-hour drive from Johannesburg and offers hiking trails and bird and wildlife watching . Due to its remote location and minimal light pollution , Golden Gate is an excellent destination for stargazing . Clear night skies provide a breathtaking view of the stars .
Clarens , about a 30-minute drive from the park , is especially known for its vibrant art scene , quaint shops and cafés . Many artists have studios in the village , allowing visitors to meet them in person and purchase unique pieces . In addition to its cultural offerings , Clarens also provides opportunities for hiking , mountain biking and trout fishing in the nearby rivers .
