‘ Wicked problems ’ in the workplace :
Solving these through collaboration
By Masenyane Molefe , PPS Executive for Human Resources
Remember when Netflix was known for its DVD rental business model ? Probably not . That almost cost it its existence in 2000 when it faced what is described as a “ wicked problem ” – how to stay afloat in a rapidly changing digital market – a problem many companies and teams face today .
As digital streaming rose in popularity , Netflix ’ s DVD rental model quickly became outdated . The company had to shift its entire strategy and embrace streaming to survive . However , the solution was not just in the pivot itself – the collaboration across various teams helped Netflix solve its wicked problem . As recounted in an article by Monday Morning Economist dated 2 October 2023 , Netflix ’ s teams from technology , content licensing and original programming worked together to develop a robust streaming platform . The technology team ensured the platform was reliable and user-friendly , while the content licensing team secured deals with major studios to provide a wide range of streaming content . The original programming team also played a crucial role by creating exclusive content that attracted and retained subscribers .
This collaborative effort allowed Netflix to transition successfully to a streaming service and become a dominant player in the entertainment industry . Before the pivot , Netflix ’ s market value was around $ 50 million . After the successful transition to streaming , the company ’ s market value skyrocketed to almost $ 300 billion on the NASDAQ , making it one of the most valuable companies in the world .
BUT WHAT IS A ‘ WICKED PROBLEM ’?
Design theorists Horst Rittel and Melvin Webber coined the term “ wicked problem ” in the 1970s to describe challenges that are difficult to define and have no clear solution . Wicked problems are characterised by incomplete , contradictory or changing requirements , making them particularly difficult to address through traditional problem-solving methods . They often require ongoing adaptation and creativity , as solving one aspect of the problem can lead to new issues or unintended consequences .
WHY COLLABORATION IS KEY
Wicked problems require diverse perspectives , as they often cut across multiple disciplines . Solving these challenges often demands collaboration . Teams must pool their knowledge , skills and insights to create innovative solutions that would not be possible if members acted individually . Collaborative efforts help broaden the understanding of the problem , reveal hidden aspects and identify potential paths forward that might otherwise be overlooked .
Leveraging diverse perspectives , cultivatating agile and innovative cultures and sharing responsibilities are key strategies for effectively addressing complex , multi-faceted workplace challenges .
