CEO ’ S DESK

We have announced our financial results for 2023 in April and the feedback from advisers and members was very positive . However , I have noted in my commentary on the results that our life and health claims experience is still worse than longer-term actuarial expectations . This is not only a PPS phenomenon . Other insurers are witnessing similar trends .

It begs a few questions . Is there still an underlying COVID-19 effect ? This is difficult to answer , as few people go for COVID-19 testing these days . Do we live in a more unhealthy , toxic world ? And closer to home , is it more difficult for graduate professionals to practice healthy and happy lifestyles than in the past ?
I have recently read Dr Peter Attia ’ s book Outlive about the science and art of longevity . This book is something I recommend to everyone , particularly professionals . Our busy lives and obligations often make it difficult to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle . Dr Attia emphasises that longevity involves not only how long we live ( lifespan ) but also the quality of our lives ( healthspan ). He explores how to achieve a healthy and quality life through exercise , nutrition , sleep , emotional health and more .
As professionals , we already know the importance of exercise and enough sleep , and the negatives of processed fast food and sugar . The real challenge is implementing this knowledge amid our packed schedules . Trying to make these changes alone often leads to failure , highlighting the importance of support and community in our journey to a healthier life .
The human species is a communal one , where we depend on each other , on the tribe around us . It is how we have survived for thousands of years . It has been said that , after the fear of death , our biggest fear is the fear of not fitting in . Because , years ago , the two were actually the same , being rejected by the tribe meant death . It is in our genes to try to belong . We depend on others , not only for economic survival but also for vesting good habits and for emotional wellness .
Which brings me to the theme of this edition of The Professional : Synergy . Achieving goals becomes significantly easier with the support and encouragement of others , adding an extra layer of motivation . Activities like walking , running or cycling become more enjoyable when done with others . Similarly , societal acceptance of healthy sleep habits can make it easier to incorporate them into our longevity strategies .
Some of our members are currently participating in another PPS Healthy Weigh Challenge . Feedback from past participants highlights the fun and life-changing impact of the challenge , largely thanks to its communal aspect . Participants benefit from each other ’ s journeys and enthusiasm , embodying the true spirit of synergy .
On page 8 I attempt to cover this hairy topic in a little more detail . On reflection , I again realise how important synergy is in our professional careers . As teams , we can accomplish so much more than as individuals . My hope and wish is that our members will outlive ! By paying serious attention to our physical and emotional health , we can become even better professionals . Our purpose at PPS , after all , is to assist our members to live the lives they want to live !
