Keyless entry , keyless risks :
Safeguarding your vehicle in a digital world
In the ever-evolving landscape of automotive technology , one thing has become abundantly clear : convenience and security often walk hand in hand . But is it always safe ?
Traditional car keys were our steadfast guardians in the notso-distant past , providing a tangible sense of security . But as technology advanced , the advent of keyless entry systems promised an unprecedented level of ease and sophistication . However , a disconcerting revelation emerged in 2022 when the Insurance Crime Bureau reported a disturbing surge in the targeting and theft of vehicles equipped with keyless systems . This apparent paradox — where technology designed to enhance our lives inadvertently exposes us to new vulnerabilities — demands our attention and vigilance .
As we explore keyless entry vulnerabilities and protective measures , staying ahead of this threat is imperative .
There are several different types of keyless entry systems . The most common is a fob ( a small handheld device that controls a remote keyless entry system ) or a key card the driver carries . When the driver approaches the car , the fob — via a radio frequency with the car ’ s computer system — unlocks the doors automatically . The driver will get into the vehicle , and because the key is within range , they simply have to push the start button to start the car . Some keyless entry systems also include a feature like remote start , allowing the driver to start the car from a distance or via a smartphone app .
Hugo du Preez , Technical Operations Manager of PPS Short-Term Insurance , says , “ Keyless entry systems were developed to make it more convenient and secure to access and start a vehicle without needing a physical key . However , criminals now manipulate this technology or convenience to steal vehicles . They use a radio frequency enhancer device which amplifies the strength of the radio frequency signal . The vehicle will detect what it thinks is the frequency for the key that is within range . It will then automatically unlock and can be started with the push start button . The challenge with keyless entry is you need to be out of range for the vehicle to lock , creating a window of vulnerability as you are walking away from your vehicle that criminals can then exploit , and they do so within seconds .
“ Vehicle owners need to be
vigilant and aware of the actions of individuals around them .
