College holds a strong love/ hate relationship with many students in the United States. While on one hand, college can be seen as the gateway to adulthood, including the gain of knowledge and a path to find your true passions, on the other hand it can be the cause of thousands of dollars in debt. My question is, is all of this debt really necessary for a good, quality education?
Based on recent studies, state funding for public universities has dropped in the past few years. This is causing high spikes in the tuition costs and fees for college. In addition, some states have reduced their financial aid programs for students in need of assistance. For example, the college tuition in Iowa has raised 24%. In other states, like New York, the government has cut as much as $184 million from higher education funding budgets. Overall, the cost of college has increased 1,120% in the past 30 years.
