Artist Statement
This piece represents all of the things that can hold you back and keep you from being successful. The pale, plaster like hand resting on the figure's shoulders represent the people and comments people make and what they can say and do that may keep you from success. The dark figure is a pawn which is one of the first pieces to move in a chess game. I wanted to include the pawn because it is a very mobile, moveable piece. It can be manipulated into moving into certain directions, depending upon what hand you let move the pawn. The base stands in a pile of pennies beneath. Financial situations can often make it SEEM harder to reach your goals, but the issue can be resolved. There are stereotypes, family issues, and other issues that can keep you from reaching your goals, but one thing that will make the difference between a bright future or dim future is you. If you work hard enough, push through all of the people who tell you that you won't accomplish anything and amplify the voices of encouragement, you can reach your goals. Make good choices, get an education, and have hope. Your future isn't written yet. You are the author. Your words are the tools to build your future, so write it well.
