Beyond just continuing education for regulatory purposes , professional development is another way of maintaining and improving a person ’ s skills and knowledge in their specialty . They may expand their expertise and incorporate it into complementary areas , thus becoming well-rounded professionals with increased opportunities for advancement or entry into an entirely new area of expertise .
Leaders who encourage employees to pursue professional development – and who recognize and award that achievement – frequently report happier , more productive employees . The Gallup report 3 stated employees who were more engaged and believed their work had purpose were more productive and 21 % more profitable . The report also indicated nearly 53 % of employees are considered “ not engaged ” or having no real connection to their work . These employees are neutral as to whether they remain , or whether they take the next best offer . Professional development support can provide a strong connection to role and workplace , thus increasing overall satisfaction and happiness .
