Isocyanate prepolymers are used widely in coatings , adhesives , sealants , and elastomers ( CASE ) as building blocks of polyurethane materials . This is due to their versatility in terms of offering a wide range of reactivities during polyurethane synthesis , in addition to suitable and adjustable mechanical properties of the final polyurethane materials .
Synthesis of isocyanate prepolymers at an industrial scale can be challenging due to side reactions and issues related to controlling reaction rates and the final product stability . The aim of the present co-location research project with UNSW and Envirosystems is to develop an upgraded isocyanate prepolymer system suitable for large-scale industrial production . So far , this joint research has provided guidance toward optimal compositions for predictive models addressing the development of parameters , such as stability , tensile stress and strain , tear resistance , adhesion and other physical properties of a variety of polyurethane materials .
