The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall to visit The Edible Garden Show 2014
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are to visit The Edible Garden Show when it opens at London’s Alexandra Palace on Friday, March 28.
The UK’s only national gardening event dedicated exclusively to ‘Grow Your Own’ fruit and vegetables was launched in 2011 to meet the phenomenal public demand for information on home-grown produce and healthy eating. Gardening experts and innovative exhibitors provide invaluable advice on all aspects of growing from the latest gadgets for your garden or allotment, to organic growing and sustainability.
Countless numbers of people are digging for the dinner plate throughout the UK on allotments and vegetable patches in the garden. The rollercoaster trend – sparked by a desire to eat healthily and more cheaply - has seen sales of seeds for fruit and vegetables outstrip those for plants and flowers. More than 300,000 people work allotments in the UK while over 100,000 people are on allotment waiting lists as they seek a slice of the ‘good life’.
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will tour the exhibition and also meet young people who have been taking part in a national schools’ initiative to design a ‘dream edible garden’.
As a keen gardener and farmer himself, The Prince runs the Mygrove competition, a site which has been specially designed for school children to share the fun of growing their own fruit and vegetables, where they have the chance to win a visit to The Prince's sustainably run garden at Highgrove.
The Edible Garden Show is staged over three days from March 28-30 with experts including botanist and award-winning TV presenter James Wong, the BBC’s One Show gardening guru Christine Walkden, the ever popular TV and radio presenter Pippa Greenwood and former Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins.

Coinciding with the Royal visit on the opening day, BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time programme is being recorded at Alexandra Palace and will include special features from The Edible Garden Show.
Show visitors can pick up some delicious recipe suggestions from chef Rachel Green in the show’s Cookery Theatre, before shopping for the very best fresh produce available. TV chef Phil Vickery will be giving cookery demonstrations at the show on Saturday. There are also opportunities to learn all about keeping hens and chickens with talks from poultry vet Victoria Roberts, and youngsters can get hands-on experience of ‘grow your own’ in the Potting Shed feature area.
