Letters to the Editor
From Helen Harrison
Most Ordinariate musicians will be aware of the
Anglican Use Gradual which is now downloadable.
The Church Music Association of America’s website,
musicasacra.com, has several versions of the Introits
and Communion Antiphons under its “resources”
section. Some of these predate the current Roman
Missal and others have been or are being modified to
match the new texts.
It would appear that the Ordinariate is using the
modern Roman Missal’s Introits. Musicians may then
like to visit John Ainslie’s website, benedicamus.org.
uk. Until 1 July Ainslie’s antiphons are downloadable,
but will be removed prior to their publication as the
book “English Proper Chants” on 3 September.
Ainslie has included the music at the beginning of
Palm Sunday and the feast of the Presentation, using
traditional chants. His introits come in three forms
- square notes, modern notation for the melodies,
and accompaniments. A few psalm verses are
provided for each antiphon but of course do not use
our tra nslation. The psalm tones are simple enough
for most congregations to learn and then manage
provided they have the pointing. The antiphons
require a cantor or schola who can read music well.
Not all of our groups will be able to manage that.
