Much of this is industrial, with the china clay extracted at nearby Parc contributing to this industrial activity. unemployment is a concern However, unemployment is a problem. The Cornish Guardian reported on 23rd September 2013 that unemployment in St Austell was down to 3.4% against a national figure of 4.4%. Nevertheless unemployment is a concern, as is low pay for - often seasonal - workers. As we drove into the town, a stop for fuel was required. I filled up with diesel, and walked to the shop to pay.
