aint Austell
is one of the largest towns in Cornwall. 20,000 people live in St Austell
proper, with 35,000 living in the “area” of the town. Much of this is industrial, with the china clay extracted
at nearby Parc contributing to this industrial activity.
unemployment is a concern
However, unemployment is a problem. The
Cornish Guardian reported on 23rd
September 2013 that unemployment
in St Austell was down to 3.4%
against a national figure of 4.4%.
Nevertheless unemployment is a
concern, as is low pay for - often
seasonal - workers.
As we drove into the town, a stop
for fuel was required. I filled up
with diesel, and walked to the shop
to pay. There was a notice on the
door telling us that the owners had
advertised for two people to work
on the cash tills at this filling station/
shop. 120 people appl
