The relationship
between the early English Church and the Papacy had all sorts of
consequences. The obvious one was that England ended up a Christian country, with bishops
acknowledging the primacy of the Bishop of Rome. Another element was that England was very quick in
adopting new devotional cultures that developed in the Eternal City. The example of the devotion to Mary is,
perhaps, the most famous of these.
