Lead Story
Newman Pilgrimage
by Arnold Herron
Sunday 9 th October is the day when the Church remembers Blessed
John Henry Newman and although it will be a special day for all in the Personal
Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, it will also be a day of special celebration
in Littlemore, about which Newman wrote: “There it has been, that I have both been
taught my way and received an answer to my prayers.” Letters and Diaries, XI 132/3
Sadly, this year it falls on a Sunday,
which takes precedence.
However,
some
will
transfer it to Monday.
At Littlemore it is being celebrated on Saturday 8th
October with Mass at Noon in the Blessed Dominic
Barberi Parish Church, Littlemore. Monsignor
Andrew Burnham will be the celebrant and preacher. at 7.45pm from St Aloysius, 25 Woodstock Road,
The Oxford Oratory to Littlemore. A Candle Light
Procession from 89 Rose Hill will begin at about
9.30pm and at 10pm there will be a Holy Hour with
Benediction in Bl. Dominic Barberi church (priests
will hear confessions during the Holy Hour). This
will be followed by a Procession to The College and
Thanksgiving in Newman’s chapel.
Day of celebration There is ample parking at Blessed Dominic Barberi
Parish Church and buses 3, 3A or 16 will take you back
into Oxford City Centre.
Tea and coffee will be offered in the parish hall, we
are all asked to bring a packed lunch. At 2pm there is a
Talk “Newman and the Vocation of the Christian in the
World” by Fr Ian Ker and from 2.30pm Guided Tours
in The College and to St Mary’s and St Nicholas (the
Church of England Parish Church built by Newman)
will also be available.
Later that evening there is a “Night Walk” starting
This is not another one of The Portal’s Newman Days.
You will remember we held a very successful one in
July; rather this is organised by those lovely people of
The Work. You will find Br Sean’s article on Newman
on page 12 in this edition of The Portal.
