Girl Scouts
Continued from 9
omon Calhoun Center in St. Augustine.
Three Flagler-based troops organized
the event and asked for donations of
cake mix and icing, plus birthday party
supplies, to create Birthdays in a Bag to
distribute to local food pantries.
Ocean Crest has also organized an
event on Sunday, Nov. 8, to feed and
entertain farmworkers in Hastings.
The girls’ efforts support the work of
Pie in the Sky, a Hastings-based organization that provides necessary aid
to farmworkers in the area, as well as
homebound senior citizens. Pie in the
Sky also runs Farm to Family, a mobile
farmers market that brings fresh, local
produce to food deserts in St. Johns
County.
A SOLUTION TO SPIDER VEINS, VARICOSE VEINS & LEG PAIN
Girls from kindergarten to high
school have worked over the last few
months to collect items for the workers,
from toiletries to socks to canned food
to jackets and sweaters. At the event,
girls will serve an early Thanksgiving
dinner to the farmworkers and will organize activities to give the workers an
afternoon of relaxation and fun.
Girl Scouts works to build girls of
courage, confidence and character;
most of the local events are girl-run,
with support from leaders and parents.
Area scouts are part of Ocean Crest
Girl Scouts community, which is part
of Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, and
serves girls in St. Johns and Flagler counties. Girls can join at any time during
the year and will never be turned away.

Because Gabriel House receives no
state or federal funding, the organization
depends upon the support of volunteers
and donors to help fund its services.
One of the more popular volunteer activities is known as “Chef’s Night In,”
whereby local volunteer groups prepare
and serve a meal for Gabriel House
guests and their caregivers.
“It can be overwhelming for caregivers to care for their loved one around
the clock, support them during their
daily medical treatments, then to have
to come home and cook a meal,” Callahan said. “To have volunteer groups
come in and bring a healthy meal is a
tremendous help.”
The holidays are a particularly difficult time for Gabriel House guests undergoing medical treatments far from
home, she added, and volunteers can
help make the holiday season brighter.
“During the holidays, many people
look for ways to give back,” Callahan
said. “We’re always looking for volunteers to help support our guests, whether it’s by making a meal, donating paper
goods and other household items or
making a donation.”
