QUIZ CLUB
Which planet has a moon called Ganymede ? Which insects carry and spread malaria ? In Greek mythology , who was the twin sister of Apollo ?
These are a few of the questions our Lower School Quiz Club members have been puzzling over this year .
Their knowledge of topics ranging from literature and history , to sport and film , has been extremely impressive and we have thoroughly enjoyed learning new weird and wonderful facts together too . The students have taken on new challenges with courage , and supported each other admirably in their teams .
We hope to be able to enter some regional and national competitions in the very near future , and really put our newfound knowledge to the test !
POKÉMON GO ! CLUB
Gotta catch ‘ em all ! Every Wednesday at 1.30pm , students from all age groups have been coming together to trade , battle against each other , and carry out virtual ‘ raids ’ that are in the Pocklington area – right from the comfort of the RS department ! New students have begun to join the club , too , and other staff members are showing a keen interest ( yes … there are some strong
Pokémon Go ! players amongst us !) It is wonderful to see students interacting from different year groups , and discussing a common interest .
My favourite moment is after a raid , when all phones are placed on a single table to see if anyone is lucky enough to be gifted a ‘ shiny ’ Pokémon ( which is a rare Pokémon , often a different colour ). Admittedly , I am still waiting to catch a shiny Psyduck , and am very envious of those who already have one ! eSPORTS CLUB
In September 2021 , with the help of our ICT Prefect , Dylan Barton , we successfully launched the eSports Minecraft Club . The first term we had a keen group of Fourth Year students , all eager to show off their expertise , and we got to understand what they wanted from the club during its initial stages . In Lent Term 2022 , we moved over to the First Years , who all enthusiastically play on servers against each other , in a world created by Dylan , to challenge and stretch their capabilities , and work towards common goals .
It has been great to see such an uptake on this club , and we look forward to Lamek Abraha joining the leader ’ s team and supporting Dylan with the work he has done so far .
CHESS CLUB
Throughout the year , our Chess Club has run successfully . From beginner to advanced player , players have come along to learn , to improve their playing , to gain another skill for Duke of Edinburgh , or to play just for fun . One of our highlights was when our chess team took part in the first Inter- School Tournament for Primary and Secondary Schools in
York , gaining experience in competitive chess as well as being awarded with four new chess sets and a medal .
Learning new variations of chess , such as doubles , puzzles etc ., has become an integral part of our weekly sessions . Chess is not only about winning , but also about developing thinking skills , as well as having fun playing with friends .
