SCHOOL NEWS // STAFF LEAVERS
TREVOR LOTEN
Another one I hope to keep in touch with on the court is our very own legend – Mr Trevor Loten . After spending seven years as a pupil , Trevor decided there was no better place to work – so he then spent 35 years here as a member of staff , teaching maths , in and amongst a few other things . Resident tutor , boarding housemaster , and master in charge of tennis and 5-a-side football – these are just a few of things he has done in an incredible period at Pocklington .
Trevor embodies what it means to be a Pocklington School master . Many of our parents and pupils comment on our teaching staff ’ s willingness to go the extra mile in their support . Trevor goes the extra mile and beyond – regularly supporting both day and boarding pupils with extra maths , happily sitting down with them at every free possible moment to make sure they fulfil their potential . Trevor – good luck with retirement – there is no doubt you ’ ll enjoy it – and let us know when you get that handicap down even further !
CLARE BRACKEN
Clare Bracken leaves us after sixteen years of fantastic service . Whilst I have only crossed paths with her for the last two and a half , I can safely say that the school has benefited from an incredible servant in that time and in the years that went before .
Her sense of good humour , her forthright opinions , and her incisive ability to cut to the chase in any discussion will be much missed , and I will personally miss her support a great deal .
I can safely say my knowledge of all things horses has increased exponentially over the time I have known her , and I am also glad to say it ’ s not entirely farewell , as Clare will remain in charge of our increasingly successful equestrian team .
JULIA HALDANE
Julia arrived in January 2011 , and taught Spanish and French at Pocklington for ten and a half years . Julia has an incredible command of a number of languages : French , Spanish , Italian and Polish , and she has inspired many students to study Spanish at the very highest level . Her understanding of Spanish nuance and turn of phrase will be particularly missed . Julia also has an impressive ability to guess people ’ s age – she is always within a year !
During her time at Pocklington , Julia led and accompanied several trips to Spain and to France . I know she enjoyed enabling pupils to have firsthand experience of the culture and language of different countries , and it is heartening to see how much pupils gained from these fantastic opportunities – pupils still talk about their study trip to
Valencia with Mrs Haldane with such enthusiasm , and they carry very fond memories .
Julia was also a great support to the EAL department , where she supported our international pupils with their English language .
We wish her all the best for the future .
ALEX CHENERY
Well-liked and respected by all , Alex was an enthusiastic teacher who always encouraged the best from her students . She was always happy to help students and colleagues alike , and threw herself into many areas within the school : she was heavily involved with choir and yoga ; was Resident Boarding Tutor for Faircote House for many years ; and is remembered by Adam Hall as being a keen and active – but always calming – presence in Duke of Edinburgh . Alex went to Barbados with her young family in lockdown and decided to stay on the beautiful island with her husband and two young daughters , Ariadne and Leilani .
SARAH WAINE
Sarah has a wealth of experience in EAL and has worked in various exotic locations such as Singapore , and York
University ! Sarah worked hard with students in all areas of their learning and development , and helped them to achieve good results in EAL exams . She is now dividing her time between her home in the Wolds , where she volunteers for the Driffield food bank and associated charitable enterprises , and Cornwall .
