EDDIE ’ S VIRTUAL ENGINEERING

Pocklington School Fourth Year pupil , Eddie Robson , recently received a certificate for completing a virtual engineering work experience course over half-term .
Eddie applied to Springpod , an organisation who provide free virtual work experience programmes in a variety of professions , to give young people aged 14-19 experience working with top employers in the UK ’ s most sought-after industries . Eddie is thinking of pursuing a career in engineering , so
he completed an application and was delighted to learn of his selection to participate in an engineering course .
Professionals and academics in engineering provided live workshops , including mechanical , electrical , civil , software and chemical engineering , which gave Eddie a good understanding of the skills required for engineering . He had to complete ten hours of activities and work assignments , including quizzes and activities for each engineering module , to develop skills and apply the knowledge he had gained . An example was civil engineering , where Eddie planned a route by train from his bed directly to school , so he could get there quicker and have more time in bed in a morning ! He then had to draft a covering letter as if he were applying to become an engineer . He could complete all the work at a time that suited him .
The course gave Eddie a great insight into the types of engineering he might like to do and he really recommends the experience . After Eddie had received his certificate , a representative from Springpod said , “ We were incredibly impressed by the quality of your work and would like to officially say you ’ re awesome for finishing the programme . Plus , you ’ ve taken that all-important step towards taking control of your future – well done !”

CHARITY SINGLE AND FILM RAISES AWARENESS OF HOMELESSNESS IN HULL

Upper Sixth student , George Brignall- McDougall , has filmed and edited a music video to promote a Christmas charity single to raise awareness of homelessness in Hull .
The alternative folk / pop Christmas single , entitled ‘ The Ballad of Jimmie Johnson ’, was written by Ben Burt to highlight the problem of homelessness in Hull and in the UK generally . All proceeds from sales will be donated to the Hull Homeless Community Project , which assists those affected by , at risk of , or who are currently homeless , as well as campaigning to tackle the issue of homelessness at its root causes . During lockdown , the charity has also delivered food , books , toys and games to isolated and at-risk families .
George explained : “ A friend of the family wrote the song , and they were looking for someone to make a music video to promote the single . Filmmaking has always been a passion of mine since I was young , so this was a great opportunity for me to develop my skills and , at the same time , help raise awareness of homelessness in Hull and fundraise for the charity .”
The black and white film is set in Hull and follows a day in the life of fictional character Jimmie Johnson and his dog , as they walk through the city after finding themselves homeless . There is a seasonal Christmas twist , but this does not detract from the main message that homelessness can happen to anyone .
George is studying A level photography and would like to study filmmaking at university , with the ultimate career goal of making it into the film industry as a director .
