BATTLEFIELDS 2018
One hundred
years on… and how this impacted on the
‘Immortal Salient’, visiting such sites as
Langemark, Poperinghe and Tyne Cot
CWGC. students: this was the highest number of
students that we have ever taken on a
Pocklington Battelfields trip - a genuine
pleasure for all involved.
The History Department once again
took its annual trip to the battlefields
of Western Europe and this year the
focus was on the centenary of the final
year of the First World War. After the
usual delights of the overnight Hull-
Zeebrugge ferry, the group headed for
the Ypres Salient. During the course
of the first day we traced the outbreak
of the war through to its conclusion Over the following days we visited the
Somme, Arras, Vimy Ridge and Neuve
Chappelle before concluding where we
started and completing the full narrative
of the Great War back in Ypres. Once
again we took part in the Menin Gate
ceremony and we were able to visit
the graves and memorials of relatives
of a number of students on the tour.
And the final word must be left for the Next year… Normandy Invasion!
