THe Turtleneck

Wherever the origin of the turtle neck came from: men’s sporting in the 19th century popularly known to be used in Polo or the Ruff popularized by Elizabeth I during the Renaissance or Steve Job’s famous mock neck and jean combos. These famous faces popularized a fashion that has seemed to stick to society, and now it’s back this 2013 fall season, like they say what comes around goes around.

For entertainment Silverlake houses the historic Vista Theater which plays movies on the original film reels unlike the contemporary methods and featuring art deco light fixtures. The qualities of film reels differ than digital reels, which are a sight to be seen. If you love live music and discovering new performers and bands The Satellite on Silverlake Boulevard is a venue filled with pool tables dance floor and cheesy photo booth machines. Musicians, writers, and artists take in everything from experimental noise ensembles to alternative rock, and droned out girl bands.

A quick peek into the Silverlake neighborhood will have you coming back back for more if you’re any sort of creative person. This small hub hidden in LA has a culture all its own. -Candice Kao

From American designers like Altuzarra or Proenza Schouler to French house Celine’s genius/ Phoebe Philo or superstar bloggers; the turtle neck can be worn a copious of ways. From chunky cable knitted worn with slouchy denim and riding boots for an off-duty look to paper-thin mock necks worn in a collegiate manner or even the crop, which seems to be a little schizophrenic. However it may be this classic unisex silhouette can be altered to fit everyone’s needs.

There is something subtly sexy about the turtleneck, with pop culture these days everything is coming off. The lack of the exposure of the clavicle (collarbone) makes a person seem more compelling and mysterious. The minimal look and slightly masculine trend is a hit to try no matter what “fashion tribe” you belong in. With knitted mod mock turtle necks paired with cigarette pant and loafers for a boyish feel or mixing it up with something a little more daring like a leather pant or origami skirt for some fun juxtaposition to the sometime stuffiness of the turtle neck.
