Paintings

by Tekeya Carter

As a child, I was extremely quiet. I always kept my imagination to myself out of fear of being judged. The ability to create is freedom. Painting, drawing, and sculpting allows me to express the ideas and thoughts that I was once afraid share. To me, creativity means the absence of fear.

I'm inspired by growing up on the Southside of Atlanta and music. I grew up listening to Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blidge, Sade, Outkast, Kilo Ali, and Uncle Luke. My art reflects that. I like to call my style Soft Ghetto which consist of paintings with cockroaches and watermelon and sculptures of gold vaginas, and beautiful black women.

I love when people analyze my art. It makes me feel good because my art is simply a reflection of everything I love. It's a reflection of everything I've experienced. Every piece is a chapter of my life. It's honest and it's fearless.
