After Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh
saw black swans in coastal areas of
Australia’s central west in 1697 the bird
took on profound significance. The English
later named their settlement and the
waterway running through it, the Swan
River Colony, after the bird, which is also
an emblem of Western Australia.
