Traditionally, motifs on a coin have raised relief,
however, an incused design is pressed into the surface
of the blank.
This rarely seen technique has been used to remarkable effect on the
reverse of a unique addition to our Australian Koala family of collectables.
Struck from 1oz of pure silver, the first incused Koala coin portrays
Australia’s favourite tree-hugging marsupial clinging to a branch. Docile
creatures, koalas spend the majority of their time in eucalypt trees either
eating gum leaves or simply sleeping.
With an obverse struck in The Perth Mint’s remarkable high relief format,
this stunning and unusual coin combines two very different numismatic
features. Limited to a mintage of only 5,000, it’s an essential acquisition for
enthusiastic Koala collectors worldwide.
