A subtle variation in throttle
application and the approach to
the corner sequences and suddenly
Magnussen’s tyre temperatures
were back within range.
“The biggest challenge for a rookie
now,” Temple adds, “is not just
how fast you are, but how efficient
you are and that’s where data
intelligence really counts. We spend
a lot more time working on that
with Kevin than we do with a more
experienced driver such as Jenson,
simply because there’s more room
to improve with a younger driver.”
That’s why he’ll “saturate”
Magnussen with data away from the
track, but restrict the data flow on a
race weekend to the bare essentials.
“Kevin has intelligence,” says
Temple, “and that’s vital because
he understands that the last few
tenths of lap time don’t come from
ragging a car around a circuit but
from taking a fractionally different
approach with the throttle or
braking two metres later.”
