Why do
politicians
take it all off?
by Alexandra Kazes
“He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a
man. He that is more than a youth is not for me, and he that is less than a man, I am
not for him”
William Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing
Following my Halloween debut in the Perfect
Gentleman, I was delighted to get a call back.
“The next issue will be our political issue” said
the voice on the other side of the phone.
Having a double degree in Political Science, I
nervously started running through my dusty
memory log to make sure I still remember all
the correct terms, events and structures of the
political labyrinth. “I would like for you to
write about facial hair in Politics....” A
prolonged pause at my end was followed by a
roaring laughter. “Off course you do!” After
having a Jew write about Halloween, asking a
woman to write about beards makes perfect
sense...I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I was trying to push away the obvious historical
villains out of my head in order to gain an
overall perspective of the biological,
sociological, cultural, historical, religious and
off course political aspects...admittedly with
only limited success.
The recourses of research and points of
reference seemed to be endless and yet I
wanted to narrow it down to a more definable
topic.
