STYLISH GENTLEMAN A Gentleman on Holiday By Zach Falconer-Barfield I remember I was in my early 20s and I was in resort in the Mediterranean with my lady of the time. We were about to enter a nightclub and the doormen, was shocked to hear our British accents. He thought we were Dutch. I asked him why? He said that no British or American for that matter dressed that well to go out, especially to dinner and a club. We chatted for awhile after that and then the lady & I went in and danced the night away. All I was wearing was a pair of beige linen trousers and blue linen shirt and some blue suede loafers. I thought I was casual but I reflected later the next day, that how sad it was that so few people had style on holiday. So put away your Union Jack shorts and your Ironic T-Shirts or USA baseball caps and let us increase your sartorial status in the sun. The Casual The staples of any summer holiday, are T-shirts & Shorts. The T-shirt started as an under garment for the US Navy in 1898 but achieved cult status as Outerwear by Marlon Brando & James Dean. The simple white T-shirt is the staple of any summer wardrobe and should be the staple of your holiday suitcase too. Chose a collar that works for you, crew neck, v-neck, mandarin or more. Then a style you suits you; shorter sleeves, chest pocket, textured edges and more. Choose a fit that works for you, please though gentleman, unless you have the stomach of Tom Hiddlestone, don’t go for the skin tight T-shirt. 7
