Mannered Gentleman by Ruairidh Bulger At the time of publication, the 2016 UEFA European Championships (commonly called Euro 2016) has drawn to a close. For those reading this who don't recall, or never knew, the beginning of the championships were marred by violent clashes between fans of Russia and England. Admittedly, this level of violence has not been seen for many years, but once again it brings the news spotlight on the fact that Brits travelling abroad do not have the best reputation. In fact, there is a very strong stereotype surrounding brits abroad, and let's face it, it is not a flattering image. The Brit Abroad Stereotype Brits abroad are viewed as loud, drunk, and sunburnt. They are seen as ridiculously Stop Shouting at Foreigners dressed, often with Union Jacks, when they are wearing enough clothes. They have never done enough research about where they are going, what they are seeing, and what the local culture is, not to mention thinking about learning any of the local language before they go there. Brits also think of themselves as 'travellers' rather than tourists, as though this title bestows qualities that makes them somehow culturally superior to visitors from other countries, but refuse to eat food unless they are able to also get it at home. They also talk about 'doing' places that they have seen, be it a country, city or specific tourist venue. Brits also cary their reputation of moaning abroad, be it about the weather, or the prices. Our only saving graces are our sense of humour and open-mindedness. 21
