Check the Chip Day !

August 15th is National Check the Chip Day ! This holiday is created as a reminder to pet owners about having their pets microchipped and keeping registration information of the microchip up to date .
First , what exactly is a microchip ? There is some confusion about microchips in pets and the capability of what the chip can do . A microchip is an implantable chip , the size of a grain of rice , which when scanned , provides a unique identification number registered to the owner and the pet . After the identification number is entered in the universal pet microchip lookup tool , a call can be placed to the microchip company who will ultimately provide the owners registration information and make those happy reunions happen ! A microchip is placed under the pets skin with a needle and syringe , typically between the shoulder blades , however the chip itself can migrate around slightly . Implanting a microchip is not much different than a routine pet vaccination and does not require anesthesia or care post implantation .
Studies show microchipped dogs are 50 % more likely to be returned to their owners , and cats having just a 2 % chance of being reunited without a chip , are over 35 % more likely to be returned when microchipped . Microchips only work when owner ' s information is up to date on their pets microchip registration . The American Veterinary Medical Association offers a Microchipping Animals FAQ full of information , including links to companies and websites with the universal pet microchip lookup tool .
