AAS Rescue Partner , Averting CATastrophe , has rescued 74 animals so far this year . Averting CAT-astrophe is committed to the rescue , rehabilitation , and placement of cats and kittens as well as public education regarding proper care and the importance of spay / neuter in battling the escalating overpopulation problem . Like Averting CAT-astrophe , every Rescue Partner is an essential part of life saving measures at Arlington Animal Services .

Healthy Kittens
Do the kittens look sick or injured ? Do they have crusty eyes or nasal discharge ? TAKE TO THE SHELTER
Wait and watch !
If you find kittens outdoors , do NOT touch them , do not disturb them . If you don ' t see their mother ... it does not mean they are abandoned . Their mother may just be out looking for food , or even hiding from you . Check on the kittens , from a distance , over several hours to see if their mother returns . It is rare that mothers abandon kittens . If mom returns , leave them undisturbed until they are 8 weeks old . If mom does not return after 6-8 hours , take to the shelter .
