Country Chair’s Message
ROTARACT TANZANIA.
D ear Rotaractors,
Welcome to the month of September!
It’s such a pleasure to have this opportunity to write to all of you.
What a blessing August has been, our District has charted a new Rotaract Club, a big step
towards growing our membership. Big applauds to each and every one of us for our continued
efforts to share with friends about Rotaract, let’s not tire and let’s always be proud of this
amazing community.
As we all know, September is the month with a theme of Basic Education and Literacy. My
favourite Rotary theme.
I think we can all agree illiteracy is a hindrance to development in any nation. I quote The
Late Mwl. Julius Kambarage Nyerere who in one of his speech mentioned the 3 development
killers for a nation to be: 1. Illiteracy, 2. Poverty, 3. Diseases.
With the literacy rate in Africa suggested to be at 64% (Wikipedia), This proves that we
still have a lot to do to increase it to 100% and as youth this responsibility now lies on our
shoulders. We should be at the forefront of enhancing the quality of delivery of our education
and initiate programs to improve the literacy rates in our respective countries.
So, one can ask himself/herself, what role can I play? Well I got few suggestive ideas. How
about your Club organizing to refurbish a library at that local school near you? or how about
your Club organizing a visit to a children centre/youth centre and do a book reading program?
How about organizing essay competitions in schools? See there is plenty you and me can do
that collectively will help to improve our education and literacy rate.
Let’s get out there and make an impact! Viva Rotaract!
