Editorial. MAKE BOOKS AND READING SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE. “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity. Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right.... Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.” Kofi Annan. September is Basic Education and Literacy month and also my favorite theme month because it’s a time when we come together to further the literacy goal through the various activities that Clubs in the District participate in to further this area of focus. Let us provide age and skill appropriate material to our communities, encourage silent reading time and use literacy to develop, adapt, connect and utilize our skills in our rapidly changing world and let us make books and the reading culture socially acceptable in our various communities. Remember, the man who does not read has no advantage over Literacy basically encompasses teaching and the man who cannot read. learning, reading, writing, speaking, listening, interpretation of visual representation among other things. Generally, literacy is the foundation for all world-based communication.
