Short stories can show us another world. I was honored recently to read an advance copy of Joanne O’Sullivan’s debut Between Two Skies. The story follows the life of Evangeline Riley as her world is devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Never have I read a novel which so encapsulated the healing experience associated with trauma and losing one’s foundation. Within this issue, we are humbled to feature an exclusive interview with the author as she talks about creating the novel, finding Evangeline’s voice, and how stories help to heal those who write them.

Some may call stories escapism. I don’t agree. I believe by reading and writing stories, we become stronger human beings with new insights into the world around us. May we carry them like a flame into the night.
