Descriptions of Featured Art

In creating this series of pieces I started thinking over what the concept of my work was going to be. I wanted to make myself happy, but more importantly, I wanted others to see the passion and joy I have for painting. So instead of over-thinking and coming up with a life-altering, impactful statement, I approached my project from a different angle and just did what I loved. I explored and I painted.

I have been fortunate enough to travel to places such as Europe, Haiti and Morocco, and during my time traveling I have gotten to understand the people and my surroundings most by bringing along my sketch book. This is exactly what I did for this project: I explored places around North Carolina, including Winston Salem, Greensboro and High Point. I sketched and took photographs of structures and places that were built to be beautiful but were taken over by time. Every location I went to was nothing close to being put together, but had fallen metal or cracked siding. To me, these are the places that told a story.

I find the most joy in adventure and exploration of the places around me and appreciating them for what they were and what they are now. I wanted people looking at my work to find an appreciation for places around us that may be overlooked. I wanted to bring the world back to our attention that we sometimes so effortlessly forget.
