as though he was the good guy, but I let him take the picture in the first place. We had both been at fault.

As I left the principal’s office, my mortification trailed behind me. I saw Simona’s purple hair popping above the chair in front of the secretary. She looked at me with eyes I didn’t know how to read. I had never seen her look at me like that. They were just like mom’s eyes when I was little and got hurt. Was it compassion?

In the car on the way home, Simona sat next to me in the back seat. She linked her arm in mine, like we used to do when we were little. I leaned my head on her shoulder.

Sometimes tectonic plates rub against each other and create destruction. Other times, they slowly push up against each other and make new formations. It’s ongoing, and it’s done over billions of years, but the outcome can be as breathtaking as the Rocky Mountains. I wanted to tell Simona, but I think she already knew.
