Rhythm, Ancestry in Marfa, TX: I was fortunate enough to have had a musical education. When I was six, I learned how to play the violin, and I continued until I was 13. At the time, I knew I wasn't the best player--I never got first chair, but I enjoyed making melodies and taking risks with the art, especially at home when I didn't have to stick to a score. Even though I did know I was lucky at the time, now that I'm older, I appreciate my education in music even more. It's influenced the way I think, the way I write, and so much more. When I took this image, I used the bow I played with in junior high, and I placed my grandma's ring below. To me, this image explores how time, risk, music, and family intersect.

Shop-Till-You-Drop Symphony; Marfa, TX: In this image, the antlers come from a man named Andy, who sells bones, tools, appliances, and other items at his store in Cherokee, TX. The deer died of natural causes, and you already know that this bow comes from my junior high years. There's something very focused about a bow and antlers -- they both hold rhythm. Deer run with a phenomenal rhythm. How can this link up with human's version of music? When you think about it, everything has a rhythm. Shopping sprees at Prada, too. What rhythms can you make, can you run alongside with?
