In Hove’s trilogy of novels, the female
character plays a leading role. Bones tells
of a mother who looks for her son who
did not return home after the liberation
war, while in Shadows, the protagonist,
Johanne, commits suicide. In the novel,
Ancestors, Hove narrates the life of a deaf
and dumb girl, Miriro, who is married to
a drunk in the 1860s. Miriro later appears
in the dreams of a boy as an ancestor.
In the novel, Hove wittingly narrates
using traditional African idioms and
metaphors, “It is not easy to tell this story
of a deaf and dumb woman married in
her deafness, her inner silences eternal”.
