I was recently sent a pair of Hey Dude’ s new water shoes, the‘ Hey20 Active’.
I’ ve mostly worn wetsuit boots, which, as we all know, can be hot in summer! I’ ve tried some lacedup water shoes which really look like regular trainers, which I liked at first, but over time they’ ve become really hard to use, the laces need completely loosening to get your foot in, then you have to fully tighten them again, each time, especially when wet, which is a real faff. So after seeing these, I knew they’ d be a good Summer choice!
The first thing you notice about the Hey Dude’ s is their incredible lightness; it barely feels like you have shoes on, even when they’ re soaking wet. And because they are slip-ons, getting them on and off is incredibly easy and fast!
The design is pretty good, they have perforated side panels for breathability & drainage so that water can escape easily. They’ re really padded, so extremely
comfy, if you’ ve had any pair of Hey Dude’ s before, the same level of comfort exists for these too! The innersoles are removable, these have small drainage holes in them too( which can catch smaller stones), the sole also has drainage so that the water can escape the shoe completely! The sole is really grippy, which can help with wet rocks, boat launches, etc. On a paddleboard, they grip really well, too.
They dry really quickly, which was a huge selling point for me. After one lesson, during a break, they have almost thoroughly dried, ready to go again. I’ d be happy to walk around in these all day, but try to keep them for water use only!
The only downside I have experienced, due to the ease of being able to slip them on and off, is that small stones, sand etc can and does find its way in, I tend to get on the board or in the kayak / canoe and take them off and give them a quick rinse before putting them back on, and that clears the grit!
