THE GRAND FINALE: NORDKAPP
Towering 307 metres above the sea, Nordkapp is one of Norway’ s most famous landmarks. While most people see it from land, viewing it from the water offers a completely different perspective. The sheer cliffs create a dramatic backdrop, and tourists can be seen gathered on the plateau gazing out over the Arctic Ocean.
Nordkapp is also home to the Nordkapp Current, a powerful tidal stream that can generate dangerous standing waves and reflective swells against the cliffs. Strong northerly winds can further intensify the conditions. However, on the day we paddled past, we were met with a rare and perfect calm: 20 ° C, no wind, and a glassy sea.
We camped in a sheltered bay that night, watching the midnight sun hover above the horizon. The golden light reflecting off the water created a mesmerizing spectacle, a fitting reward for our journey.
A LAND OF ARCTIC WONDERS
As we paddled back to Kamøyvær, we faced strong headwinds, a final reminder that Magerøya offers no easy passage. This journey had given us everything:
Challenging currents, stunning summer weather, dramatic landscapes, and incredible wildlife encounters.
Along the way, we also encountered herds of reindeer grazing along the cliffs. Reindeer are well adapted to Arctic conditions, with thick fur and wide hooves that act as natural snowshoes. In summer, they migrate across the tundra in search of food, while in winter, they rely on lichen buried beneath the snow.
Kayaking around Magerøya is a demanding but unforgettable experience. With careful planning, respect for the natural forces, and solid kayaking skills, this journey remains one of Norway’ s most spectacular adventures – a true test of skill and endurance in one of Europe’ s last great wildernesses.
